Stephen Antonson – Sculptor of Plaster

Stepehen Antonson is an amazing sculptor. His material of choice? Plaster. Chalky, white powdered gypsum, mixed with water, “is the stuff of dreams” to the artist. Antonson was inspired when a friend came back from Paris raving about plaster furniture and lamps made from plaster, circa 1930. He began making creations for he and his wife, and the rest is history. Now, Antonson is a one-man-show, working for interior designers on commissioned pieces. We think his things are very artful and fun.

Inspired Ways to Add Seating…

Cloud Table…

The Cloud Table by artist/sculptor Guy de Rougemont (circa 1971) is a modern classic piece that is both versatile and glamorous. It comes in an array of colored plexiglass and can have an aluminum or gold finish, and is certainly interior design that could be considered ahead of its time, especially in the ’70s…although we could see this piece in a contemporary home in Austin, today. Originals are being auctioned off for six-figure sums of money, so we choose to be inspired and enjoy them from afar!

When One is Really Six…

The TriWing chair by Marco Hemmerling Studio is six chairs in one. Below, you can see the main chair. Nestled inside, though, is another smaller version. Once removed, you have two chairs that can be flipped and used for different purposes, such as reading, lounging or dining. So, each chair allows for three different ergonomically conscious ways of sitting…certainly an innovation in interior furnishings.

An Updated Tuft…

Check out this tufted chair in gorgeous steel blue velvet. It is American made and is constructed from 100% stustainable materials (which we, as interior designers love). Petrified.

Petrified wood is really quite cool. It occurs when the organic materials of the wood are replaced with minerals through a process known as permineralization. Science aside, though, we think petrified wood is beautiful. Every piece is unique and raw in some way. It comes in an array of colors and patterns, depending on the minerals it is composed of. It can be masculine, or it be just the right surprise in a very feminine space. It also transcends style, which makes it a great addition to almost any interior space.
